The eighth annual Docomomo US Tour Day event is just a few months away and as usual is filled with unique and exclusive events looking at important examples of modern architecture, sites, interiors and landscapes all across the country. We are thrilled to have The Architect’s Newspaper as the official media sponsor of the 2014 Tour Day and community sponsor the Waterproofing Company (Boston , MA). Our full list of events won’t be announced until September 9th, but this sneak peek will having you wishing you could be in multiple places at once.
We are excited to announce, Sarasota Mod Weekend, a four-day festival, presented by our partner the Sarasota Architecture Foundation that will take place from October 9-12th. Their schedule will include various bus, boat, and walking tours featuring the architecture of notable architects like Paul Rudolph as well as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Florida Southern College. Also on the schedule is a chic pool side dinner at Sarasota Yacht Club and presentations by celebrated professionals such as Lawrence Scarpa, Carl Abbott, John Howey, Raymond Jungles, and Alastair Gordon.
"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," and Paradise Palms’ bus tour of former celebrity homes found throughout southern Nevada's premiere mid-century modern community gives participants a glimpse into the glamour. On Saturday, October 11 tour guests will climb aboard an open-air double- decker bus and cruise by homes that belonged to both local and national celebrities as well as notable Las Vegans. Guests will get a chance to see the homes of Johnny Carson, Phyliss Diller, Sonny Liston, Juliet Prowse, Rip Taylor, just to name a few. The schedule will also include a brief stop and tour of the interior of the home once owned by Foster Brooks, complete with original furnishings. Returning again this year, Southfield Historical Society will host a walking tour of Michigan's fastest growing city of the 1960s. Southfield boasts an amazing collection of Mid-Century Modern homes, office buildings, commercial structures and religious institutions whose architects include Minoru Yamasaki, Gunnar Birkets, Victor Gruen, Louis Redstone, and Percival Goodman. Be sure to bring your camera because this tour will full of photo opportunities and will include several on-site inspections and discussions of the elements of Mid-Century design that has made Southfield a mid-century modern destination.
